Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Including Resonance Phenomena

Atomic Inner-Shell Physics

Part of the book series: Physics of Atoms and Molecules ((PAMO))

Abstract

The development of intense tunable synchrotron radiation sources will undoubtedly stimulate the study of inelastic X-ray scattering by bound electrons in much the same way as the progress in laser technology has revived Raman scattering investigations in the optical region. Using conventional X-ray tubes the measurement of inelastically scattered photons has been tedious under off-resonance conditions. The fundamental reason is the low electronic cross section, characterized by the square of the classical electron radius r 0 ( = 2.82 x 10-15 m). Tunability changes the situation drastically since under resonance conditions differential cross sections can typically increase 106 fold. Wiggler and undulator magnets in dedicated storage rings should make it feasible to study off-resonance scattering both in the X-ray (Eisenberger, 1980) and the ultraviolet region.
