Abstract
The thymus plays a major role in guiding the maturation, differentiation and specificity of T cells (1–4), In the adult mouse, the thymus receives small numbers of T cell precursors from the bone marrow and exports to the periphery a large variety of cells that differ by their surface antigens and functions. Bone marrow cells homing to the thymus undergo different steps of proliferation, maturation, and selection before they leave the thymus. Each of these steps is characterized by the involvement of various cell types (lymphoid or non-lymphoid) and factors whose sequential participation is still unknown.
