Cultured Heart Cells as a Model for Studying Myocardial Ischemia

  • Chapter
Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Injury

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 49))

Summary

We discuss physiological, morphological and biochemical findings associated with hypoxia, active transport inhibition and metabolic inhibition to justify the use of cultured embryonic chick heart cells as a model system for studying myocardial ischemia. Measurements of ion content (Na, K, Ca), cytosolic free calcium, ATP content, LDH release and transmembrane potentials are combined with ultrastructural and electron-probe microanalyses to identify mechanisms responsible for myocardial cell injury.

This research was supported in part by NHLBI grants HL17670, HL28280, HL29687 and HL07101.
