Abstract

In chapter 1 two alternative strategies for the treatment of spatial representation problems in relation to spatial interaction data were discussed in general terms. These were termed multi-criteria aggregation and multi-level specification. Multi-criteria aggregation is essentially concerned with grouping the basic data units that are represented in the row and column totals of the interaction matrix whereas multi-level specification involves partitioning this matrix in such a way that some of the entries are dealt with only in summary form while others are retained in their full detail.
