The Assay of Cyclic AMP in Biological Material

  • Chapter
Eukaryotic Cell Function and Growth

Abstract

The assay of cyclic nucleotide concentrations in biological material represents a considerable analytical challenge. This is due both to the low concentrations normally present in most cells and to the presence of other structurally similar compounds in much higher concentrations. With the advent over the last decade of numerous analytical procedures, the investigator is now faced with an almost bewildering choice of assay techniques. It is clearly beyond the scope of this paper to discuss each method in detail. It is equally impossible to identify a preferred method since the available procedures each have advantages and disadvantages, and so the method of choice in each laboratory will usually depend on special factors related to the system under investigation and on the particular expertise of the investigators. Particular assay parameters to be considered in making this choice include sensitivity, specificity, precision and practicability.
