Neural Integration of Thermoregulatory Responses

  • Chapter
Limbic and Autonomic Nervous Systems Research

Abstract

Temperature regulation, along with several other fields, is experiencing a quiet revolution in which the hypothalamus is losing its preeminent position as the major center of integrative control. This chapter considers whether the revolution can succeed or, indeed, if it has already. It examines the historical evidence which led to the hypothalamus being regarded as the only thermostat of the brain. It then discusses the current evidence for altering that view — evidence that other parts of the brain have been shown to be both thermosensitive and able to initiate thermoregulatory responses whether or not the hypothalamus is present.

I thank Drs. Joseph Eisenman, R. D. Luce, and Philip Teitelbaum for their many helpful criticisms of the manuscript.
