Cerebral Physiology of the Aged: Relation to Psychological Function

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of altered cerebral physiology to impairment of intellectual function in old age. Although behavioral changes in senescence are well-documented, little attention has been paid to cerebral physiologic variables, primarily because of the limitations of directly observing such phenomena. An attempt will be made here to review some of the evidence available from electroencephalographic (EEG) and cerebral circulatory studies.
