Abstract
Ontologies have been widely used in application integration scenarios, most often on the data and on the business logic level. This chapter gives an overview on ontologies in general and introduces different classification of ontologies in Sect. 3.1, and discusses various general top level ontologies that may be used for application integration in Sect. 3.2. Sect. 3.3 introduces existing infrastructures for working with ontologies, such as editors, storage solutions, or programming frameworks, and Sect. 3.4 provides an overview of the main approaches to employing ontologies in application integration.
