Abstract
The anesthesia machine serves as a therapeutic device that delivers gases and vapors and provides for spontaneous and mechanical ventilation. To do so it monitors its own function since much of what it does requires internal feedback control. In addition, the anesthesia machine monitors some of the physiological processes it controls or interacts with. The information it shows to the anesthesia care provider through numeric data and graphic trends makes it easier to predict, detect, and treat patient changes.
