Abstract

This cluster, like the last one, consists of informally organized images, but they are constrictive where the previous ones were expansive; that is to say that their mood is dampened and their visual language small-scaled rather than broad. In the last cluster the affirmative expansiveness and the informality both seemed to be the consequence of the wish-fulfilling and reparative needs that animated the painters; their motives seemed to crowd out any desire for more formally conceived compositions. Do similar motives crowd out form here as well?
