Abstract

Texas has long been a focus of activity in nautical archaeology. This chapter summarizes the State’s last ten years of shipwreck research and management. Nautical archaeology studies began in Texas because of the Platoro treasure-hunting incident in 1967; therefore, the context is actually a longer period. In all this time, the Texas Historical Commission was the principal state agency concerned with and a leader in underwater archaeology. There were few projects in the state that were not related to the state’s in-house research or conducted at its behest under cultural resource management regulations.
