Abstract
In recent years there has been an explosion of evidence-based medicine/practice. It has been the direct result of several factors: the aging of the population, the increase in patient expectations and professional expectations, the proliferation of new information technologies, and the growth of disease management modeling. Massive amounts of clinical and administrative data have been gathered and have been managed in relational databases to generate information for improving health care processes and outcomes. That information is a systematic repertory of knowledge, used often by providers, administrators, patients, and others (see Figure 1). Used properly and consistently, such evidence-based knowledge, will give users a competitive edge in the health care marketplace.
