The Detection and Isolation of a Novel Antimicrobial Peptide From the Echinoderm Cucumaria Frondosa

Phylogenetic Perspectives on the Vertebrate Immune System

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 484))

Abstract

Microorganisms and their toxins are the cause of many diseases that harm multicellular organisms and the invertebrates are as susceptible to infection by bacteria, fungi and viruses as vertebrates (Marchalonis and Schluter, 1990). The invertebrates have developed highly effective immune systems for detecting and eliminating foreign invaders, consisting of both cellular and humoral/innate components (Bomanet al.1991).
