Abstract

The number of services available in the application layer of the ISO/OSI basic reference model are in most cases much more than needed by the user for his specific application. In addition, it is possible that the same application functionality could be implemented using different services. In that case, the compatibility of the two systems could be hindered or, in the worst case, impossible. If open systems based on the same communication standards shall work together successfully, detailed arrangements have to be made for fulfilling the requirements of the application (see Chapter 9). These arrangements are called the “profiles” of a protocol stack.
