Abstract

The analysis of networks by the scattering formalism is a standard technique in ordinary electromagnetic theory. In the present chapter much of the same formalism is employed as the basis for diversion into the largely unknown territory of single photon behavior in general networks and circuits. In the treatment we shall relax the generality observed in Chapter 3 by specializing the virtual circuit terminals to well defined and physically separated transmission lines or waveguides. The many circuit configurations in both quantum and macroscopic experiments dealt with in the remainder of the book all belong to this category. The generality of the interior circuit itself, as defined in Chapter 3, is fully retained.
