Abstract
The investigation of naturally occuring noise in an unexplored plasma is a challenging task. Difficulties with measurement technique and signal recognition, as well as complications in analyzing and interpreting measurements combine to demand the very best in investigative procedure. In this paper we review a series of Venus plasma investigations which have been repeatedly compromised by problems in these areas. We will show that the nightside electric field noise studies resulting in reports of widespread lightning activity are thus fundamentally flawed.
