Abstract

If we were writing this chapter in the 1960s, our view of the clinical issues would be vastly different. Of course, when one is aware of the historical context (Hersen, 1981, 1983, 1985; Kazdin, 1978; Krasner, 1990), it becomes clear why behavior therapists in the 1960s were so strident in their assertions as to the superiority of their approach. Indeed, Hersen (1981) has referred to such “breast beating” as the historical imperative that transpires when the supremacy of the reigning theoretical position is being challenged. However, those with a sense of humor about history are quick to realize that in science the hegemony of a given theoretical position can easily give way to its finding the direction to the wastebasket of disproven approaches. But the fate of the new theoretical approach (or at least some of its less functional parts) may eventually be identical to the one that it has replaced.
