Acoustic Phonon Interaction with Two-Dimensional Electron and Hole Systems

  • Chapter
Die Kunst of Phonons

Abstract

Phonons play a significant part in the behaviour of electrons and holes in two-dimensional gases, 2DEGs and 2DHGs (for convenience in this paper we often use the abbreviation 2DEGs to cover both 2D electron and hole gases). Indeed phonon techniques have proved effective not only in studying electron-phonon interactions but also in obtaining other information on the properties of 2DEGs such as the location of dissipation and the magnitude of the energy gaps in the fractional quantum Hall state. In these lectures we aim first to provide an introductory review to the techniques being used in the field with illustrations of the type of information they provide. We then describe a number of recent experiments in which we have participated. As 2D systems form an important part of this winterschool, the review is prefaced by a short introduction to their properties and the way in which they interact with acoustic phonons. Theoretical aspects of this latter topic are covered in more detail in the lectures in this volume by Professor Shik.
