Abstract

An increase in the absolute numbers of older people is occurring throughout the world (Butler et al., 1991). In the United States, 12% of the population was age 65 or older, in 1986. It is estimated that 20% of the population will be 65 or older by the year 2030. The 75-plus and 85-plus age groups are the fastest-growing age segments of the United States population.
