Abstract

Almost a decade has passed since the diagnostic category of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) first appeared in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) of the (APA). Despite the subsequent appearance of a large literature devoted to the subject, the disorder continues to remain controversial and to promote intense debate among researchers and clinicians. Those in agreement with (1987) have voiced misgivings of the entire concept, whereas advocates of the disorder feel they are being asked to attain a strength of validity for PTSD beyond that of most other psychiatric disorders (Horowitz, Weiss, & Marmar, 1987).
