Abstract

I did not know Haldane well, met him two or three times only and heard him speak on a similar number of occasions and on none did he mention population structure or its importance in human genetics. Nor did I have any immediate recollection of its occurrence in his lectures and published works. This review therefore entailed re-reading as many as possible of Haldaneā€™s writings in a search for any statement that he made on the subject. This task has provided much pleasure, for his writings were full of reminders of some of the great classics of genetic work that we now take for granted. But especially this re-reading brought back memories of when I first discovered Haldane and particularly some of his earlier works.
