Histamine as an Intracellular Messenger in Human Platelets

  • Chapter
Mechanisms of Platelet Activation and Control

Abstract

The fusion of cells from mouse and man to produce functional hybrids, first shown by Henry Harris in 1965 (Hams and Watkins, 1965) and since duplicated using many different cell types, has emphasized the remarkable consistency and similarity in the internal constituents of cells. At the same time, an incredible diversity in the extracellular coat and in the responses of cells to extracellular messengers gives specific properties and behaviours to individual cell types. In this context, while there are hundreds of extracellular messenger compounds, to date only a few intracellular messengers have been unequivocally identified. These include cyclic AMP, cyclic GMP, calcium, inositol trisphosphate, diacylglycerol, and polyamines.
