Abstract

The past thirty years have seen extensive experimental and theoretical research1–16 on environmentally induced changes in mechanical properties of solids, namely, strength, deformability, and durability. The principal scientific and practical importance of the problem has been adequately reflected in these studies. Great diversity of environmentally induced changes in mechanical characteristics has been found. The effect can be caused by both dissolution (Ioffe effect)7,9,16 or chemical reactions (corrosive cracking17heterogeneous catalyses18,19 and “reversible” physicochemical surface interactions in the presence of related liquid-phase wetting3,4 adsorption7-13 or electric polarization.3,5,20–37 The present review deals with the latter phenomena.
