The Fin-Limb Transformation: Palaeontological and Embryological Evidence

  • Chapter
Developmental Patterning of the Vertebrate Limb

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 205))

Abstract

The problem of the protetrapod pentadactyl limb still remains under discussion. Different forms among sarcopterygians have been claimed to possess the archetype of such a limb (Jarvik, 1980; Rosen et al, 1981). Sometimes the possibility of reconstruction of this prototype on the evidence from fish fins has been rejected (Rackoff, 1980).
