Abstract

A large number of superdeformed (SD) bands has been observed in the mass 190-region, some of which showing nearly identical γ -ray transition energies. This has been illustrated for instance in 194Hg by Cullen et al.1 More recently, some measurements indicated that octupole correlations might exist in the superdeformed nucleus 193Hg. Thus, both quadrupole and octupole collective modes may play a key role in explaining the observed SD band features in this mass region. These issues are discussed in the present work.
