Gateway Congestion Controls in High-Speed Backbone Networks

  • Chapter
High-Speed Communication Networks

Abstract

We study congestion control algorithms to be used in gateways connecting LANs to a high speed backbone network. Different control mechanisms are proposed to schedule packets at the output gateways and their issues are discussed as a function of the network parameters and users traffic characteristics. We mainly focus on the reliability of the state information passed around the gateways to perform the control. We show the influence of the propagation delay on the effectiveness of the proposed policies. The inefficacy of the reactive feedback policy is shown for increased propagation delay. Improvements to the quality of the state information is also discussed in order to use efficiently the reactive control over larger networks.
