Characterization of Layered Structures by a Liquid Wedge Transducer and a Corner Reflector

Abstract

A layered solid structure immersed in a liquid supports leaky interface waves in the form of Rayleigh waves or layer waves such as generalized Lamb waves. The modes are unique to the elastic and geometrical properties of the layered structure and they can be used to characterize the structure. We introduce a special measurement geometry consisting of a liquid wedge transducer and a corner reflector that can detect the presence of the leaky modes in the layered structure. The received signal amplitude as a function of the incidence angle depends highly on the elastic parameters and thickness of the layers. The same problem is treated also theoretically. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions and they are found to be in good agreement.
