Abstract

Vertebrate reproduction is initiated and controlled by complex physiological interactions between many bodily organs and tissues that are not structural parts of the gonads or reproductive tract. These interactions occur by means of the chemical messengers that are secreted by endocrine glands. Known as hormones, their production and secretion is often ultimately induced by environmental factors acting on the nervous system. Such factors include chemical signals, visual cues, photoperiod, temperature, and tactile stimulation.
