Universities and the Local High Technology Industry: What do We Already Know?

Abstract

Given the fact that the problem of university knowledge impacts on the regional economy has not been treated extensively in the field of theoretical economics¹, the empirical research in this book needs to be based on a critical examination of the relevant empirical literature. This literature shows wide variations in terms of both its methodology and its spatial scale. It consists of surveys, case studies, descriptive analyses of existing high technology concentrations, and econometric studies. Both country level research and regional analyses have been done. This chapter focuses primarily on the results of US studies. However, there are exceptions from this general trend.
