Optical Fiber Sensor Technology

Part of the book series: Optoelectronics, Imaging and Sensing ((OISS,volume 2))

Abstract

Rare earth-doped fiber amplifiers have been extensively developed for their applications to optical telecommunication systems (Desurvire, 1994). The technology is already mature for practical implementations. Fiber lasers using rare earth-doped fiber amplifiers have also been studied mainly for the possibility of using them as short pulse, wavelength tunable or soliton sources for optical communications (Duling, 1995). The fiber amplifier provides not only high gain but also a broad gain spectrum of tens of nanometers ideal for broadband wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems (Wysocki et al., 1994). This chapter develops the discussions of Chapter 3 and deals with another important application area of fiber amplifiers that takes advantage of their unique characteristics.
