Behavioral Abnormalities and Disease Caused by Viral Infections of the Central Nervous System

  • Chapter
Parasites and Pathogens

Abstract

Viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) can produce a wide variety of behavioral consequences ranging from subtle modifications in behavior to coma or death. The determinants of the outcome of infection include the age of the host, intrinisic properties of the virus, and nature of the immune response. Mechanisms for behavioral disturbances include cell death or damage due to viral replication, cell damage second to the host immune responses, and impairment of differentiated cellular function without cytopathology (reviewed in Oldstone, 1989).
