New Insights: How Parasites and Pathogens Alter the Endocrine Physiology and Development of Insect Hosts

  • Chapter
Parasites and Pathogens

Abstract

Many parasites and pathogens alter the growth, behavior, and development of insect hosts in a dramatic fashion. The invader often initially remains cryptic, until its presence later becomes obvious as the host suffers major growth, pigmetation, or morphological anomalies, shows alterations in sexual differentiation or behavior; or develops reproductive disturbances such as castration or loss of fecundity (see Chapters 8,9, and 12; also Moore, 1993,1995; Adamo et al., 1997).
