Abstract

Evolution in bacterial genomes occurs at two levels: (1) alterations of individual nucleotides resulting from point mutations, or from recombinational events that do not incorporate novel sequences, and (2) changes in chromosome structure involving the insertion, deletion or translocation of DNA. The evolution of chromosome organization has received much less attention than point mutational evolution due to both the lack of convenient techniques to study large-scale changes in bacterial genomes at the population level and the relative paucity of quantitative theory pertaining to the rates and patterns of genome rearrangements.
