Abstract
Although some theorists, such as Szasz (1961, 1976), charge that schizophrenia is a myth and does not exist, the vast majority of mental health workers would quite adamantly maintain that schizophrenia is an extremely pervasive disorder. Definitional problems notwithstanding, the behavioral disturbances that generally characterize this construct appear throughout the world irrespective of culture, race, language, or time. Furthermore, there is no solid evidence that the incidence has changed in the last 150 years. Out of the U.S. population, 2-3% are estimated to be included in this classification (Keith, Gunderson, Reifman, Buchsbaum & Mosher, 1976). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 25% of all patients admitted to state mental hospitals are diagnosed as schizophrenic, and 50% of the inpatient populations in state mental hospitals bear the same diagnosis.
