Abstract
The research on prostaglandins has developed rapidly during the last 20 years. In addition to the classical prostaglandins (PG), new related compounds have been discovered, among them thromboxane A2 (TXA2), prostacyclin (PGI2), and leukotrienes (LT). Most of them originate from the essential fatty acid arachidonic acid (5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid), which normally is esterified to cell membrane phospholipids. Following physiological stimuli, arachidonic acid is released and converted to active compounds. This is depicted in Fig. 1.
