Abstract
The ultimate objective of this book is the exploration of the demographic determinants and consequences of health status and health behavior. The major benefit of this treatise should be the provision of a means whereby an analyst, knowing something about demographic conditions and prospects for population change, can make assumptions about health status and health behavior. This chapter focuses on health status, while Chapter 11 focuses on health behavior. These two chapters represent what might be considered the essence of health demography. Each demographic characteristic and process is taken in turn and examined in the light of its relationship with health status.
