Natural Resistance Mechanisms in Herpes Simplex Virus Infections

  • Chapter
The Herpesviruses

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

The normal host has a series of defense mechanisms that participate in sequestering and clearing invading viral pathogens (Allison, 1974). The defense systems involved fall into two major categories: Natural resistance mechanisms are immediately available to respond to the microorganism and require no prior exposure to foreign antigen in order to be operative; adaptive immune mechanisms require presensitization and are not active until several days after primary virus infection. The adaptive immune response against herpesvirus infections consists of the antibody response (discussed in Chapter 3 by Norrild) and the cell-mediated immune response (discussed in Chapter 4 by Nash, Leung, and Wildy). This chapter will focus on the role of natural resistance mechanisms in defense against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. The specific systems to be discussed include macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and interferon (IFN).
