Abstract
If one looks back at the recent developments in the theory of critical phenomena, the Kondo problem and gauge theories, one notices that the same word “renormalization group” appears in connection with approaches which at first sight look very different. In view of the subsequent discussion, it is expedient to introduce some preliminary classification of the various trends.
