Abstract

One of the exciting aspects of the twenty year “interferon era” is that research in this field has been characterized by international collaboration and information exchange. A 1957 report in the Proceedings of the Royal Society by Isaacs, of England, and Lindenmann, a fellow in his laboratory from Switzerland, ushered in the interferon era (1). In retrospect, Ørskov and Andersen in 1938 probably also observed interferon production after vaccinia infection of rabbit skin (2). It is evident from a review published in 1963 that by then workers from all over the world understood the potential of interferon and were characterizing the parameters of this drug(3).
