The Cl Area of Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla: Role in Tonic and Reflex Regulation of Arterial Pressure

Abstract

Although it has been known from the middle of the last century that the medulla oblongata is required for maintaining normal levels of arterial pressure (AP) (see Alexander, 1946), the identification of the specific neuronal groups within that structure which serve as sympathetic promoter neurons was not established for almost a century. Indeed, the failure of investigators to reproduce the effects of spinal cord transection on AP by local lesions within the medulla, led to the concept that the “tonic vasomotor centers” represented the action of neurons distributed along a large extent of the neuraxis rather than the activity of a collection of nerve cells within a restricted zone (Hilton, 1975).
