Abstract

The effects of severe hypoxia on mammals are well documented. If hypoxia occurs abruptly, death may follow. However, if the arterial oxygen tension falls gradually, the organism may survive. It has become clear that many changes in the tissue occur during such hypoxia. Tissue changes which take place under these conditions may perform an acclimatizing role to assist in the organism’s survival. The purpose of this paper is to study changes in hypoxic tissue at the subcellular level that may constitute the mechanism of acclimation.
