Abstract
Whereas oxidants are chemicals capable of causing direct oxidative damage to living systems, prooxidants are compounds that must first undergo activation to cause oxidative damage (Ahmad, 1992). While oxidants tend to be small inorganic molecules, such as nitrogen oxides or ozone, a broad range of naturally occurring organic compounds have prooxidant properties. Prooxidant compounds are produced in great abundance by plants; because they upon activation initiate chain reactions that magnify their biological effects relative to their initial concentrations, they represent energy-efficient investments in defense against environmental stresses (Ahmad, 1992). Among those organisms susceptible to the toxic effects of plant prooxidants are insect and mammalian herbivores as well as microbial phytopathogens and plant competitors (Downum, 1992).
