Abstract
The same group of compounds, which are known as potent mutagens—namely, cytostatics and antimetabolites—are also potentially teratogenic and should not be used, if at all avoidable, to treat illnesses during the first 3 to 4 months of a pregnancy. The most dangerous known chemical teratogen for an embryo, thalidomide, is no longer used therapeutically. A warning is therefore redundant.
