Abstract

In this chapter, we shall give a short survey of the segmentation problem as it appears in the research in Computer Vision and introduce the main ideas which lead to the choice of a variational approach. The terms like edge, segmentation, region and boundary will not receive a single definition since several theories and algorithms for defining them will be compared. These terms will be therefore assumed, in the beginning of this chapter, in their heuristic meaning
