Abstract
A potential way of overcoming the air pollution problem associated with solvent-based coatings exists in the use of so-called solventless, 100 percent solids coatings. One common variety of solventless resins consists of solutions of organic prepolymers containing aliphatic unsaturation dissolved in copolymerizable organic monomers. Examples of such resins are solutions of unsaturated polyesters in styrene or vinyl toluene, or solutions of polymers containing pendant esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid in acrylate or methacrylate monomers.1 Since no solvent has to be evaporated from such systems prior to cure, little if any pollution might be expected from such resins, particularly if such compositions could be cured in very short times at low temperatures. UV and electron beam curing have been considered as cold energy sources for this purpose.1,2
