Abstract

In the search for bioactive compounds from marine sources, the selection of specific organisms and classes of compounds to be studied is dictated by bioassay, rather than the conscious choice of the investigator. As a result, efforts are often not focused on a given phylum or class of compounds. Instead, animals from different phyla and compounds varying greatly in size, type, and structural complexity are dealt with. The collection of different organisms and assorted types of natural products described in this paper illustrates these points.

P388 = cell culture of lymphocytic leukemia; in vitro activity (ED50) is measured as the dose in μg/ml that causes 50% inhibition of growth; ED50’s of less than 10 are considered active. PS = lymphocytic leukemia assay in mice; T/C % = (survival time of treated animals)/(control’s survival time) X 100; values >125 are considered active. KB = cell culture of human epidermoid carcinoma of the nasopharynx; activity is measured as for P388.
