Abstract

The growth of thin films has attracted considerable attention during the last years, and several reviews of the field as well as many original contributions have been published. For a recent review, which contains all literature, the article of J.A. Venables and G.L. Price(1) should be consulted. It is not the aim of this series of lectures to repeat this work. I shall try to make clear the fundamental connection of statistical and kinetic considerations, which govern the description of growth processes. Though this is not entirely new, it has been neglected to a certain extent in the literature. The reason for this is the large weight of the difficulties, which have been encountered in the solution of the system of kinetic equations, which have however been overcome now.
