Abstract

There is a region on chromosome six in man which contains genes which are major determinants of histocompatibility. These are the genes which confer uniqueness upon the cellular characteristics of every individual. These uniqueness markers enable the immune system to recognize tissue which is self from foreign, non-self tissue. The region, called HLA, contains four loci labelled respectively HLA-A, B, C, and D. Each of these loci has many allelic forms. In addition, there are loci believed to contain immune response genes, complement genes and a closely related region which is labelled Dr. A gene which determines B cell antigens is located in or near the HLA locus.
