Physical Properties of BaVS3 and Their Dependence on Stoichiometry

  • Chapter
Recent Developments in Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract

BaVS3 is structurally characterised by the existence of linear chains of V4+ atoms with electronic configuration 3d1. Its magnetic and electric properties are very much dependent on stoichiometry. We report measurements performed on materials with various degrees of non stoichiometry. S deficient BaVS3 has Curie Weiss paramagnetic behavior and orders ferromagnetically below 16 K. Stoichiometric BaVS shows a maximum of magnetic

susceptibility at 70 K associated with a semi metal-semiconductor transition. We suggest that the decrease of susceptibility of stoichiometric BaVS3 below 70 K is not related to antiferromagnetic

ordering as previously proposed but results from the progressive transfer of electrons from localised magnetic states to a non magnetic band, separated from the other states by a small energy gap, and which fills up exactly at zero Kelvin.
