Low Temperature Order-Disorder Transitions in Palladium Deuteride

Abstract

Recent neutron diffraction data are presented on the ordering transition which occurs in the palladium deuterium system at temperatures near 50 K. Iso-intensity contours for a single crystal palladium deuteride sample containing 77 atomic % of deuterium indicate that the transition between the two previously observed ordered lattices involves a continuous splitting of the superlattice peak as a function of deuterium concentration. The physical implications of these observations is briefly considered.
